Final Project for an Astronomy Class called Black Holes, Dark Matter, And The Universe

Astronomy Project, Chandelier & Dining Table

Black Holes, Dark Matter, And The Universe

Where It Started

I took a class in my Sophomore Year which was called Black Holes, Dark Matter, And The Universe. This class was my last science credit needed. The classes Final was to either do a Research Paper and present your findings or Write a piece of fiction that must deal with what we learned in class or Create/Design a piece of artwork whatever that may be. So, I decided to design a Dining Table & Chandelier that represents a Black Hole and its Gravitation Pull.

I still had to do Research for my project as the Professor wanted to make sure that I understand what I am basing my Design on. The design is based on a Black Holes mass and its Gravitational Pull. This is because black holes are incredible Dense objects and this creates a powerful gravitational pull for its’ Size. After the research I looked for Inspiration for the design.

Inspiration Info

For some people the Images that gave me Inspiration could be confusing, but each image is Important to how the Design.

Starting in the Top Left is a recreation of how light, matter, and gases interact with gravity and space to create unique Colors and Visuals.

Top Right is another Recreation of matter orbiting a black hole and then the Relativistic Jet which is Particles and Radiation blasting out of the Poles of the black at near light speed.

Bottom Left is a visual Representation of a black holes effect on Space Time. This grid representation of space time and how it gets affected has always Fascinated me.

Bottom Right is the Sagittarius A* this is the Supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way. This is the paths of orbiting Stars around the black hole.

The Chandelier

The Design

The One Piece of information that gave me the Spark of inspiration is that if Our Sun was to turn into a black hole, keeping its Mass & Density, it would only be Three-Kilometers in Diameter. This is quite incredible when considering our Sun is 1.39 Million Kilometer in diameter. What is even more incredible is the fact that the three-kilometer black hole that was our Sun would still have the same Gravitational Force on all the Planets in our Solar System. Not a Single planets’ Orbit would change. Just that three-kilometer ball would still do all the same work as our Sun.

The Chandelier is based on the Orbiting Paths of the Stars around the Sagittarius A*. The choice of What Paths to use come down to what were most Interesting and best suited to Communicate the Strength of a black hole. After picking what paths were going to be used, I then had to think about how they moved in a 3D Space since the video I was referencing was only 2D. What Helped with this process is the fact that when the star is orbiting on the side Closest to us then it is Solid and if it is on the other side it is Dashed.

Design Info

Since the Chandelier is the Black Hole and it is meant to be Small in comparison to the Dining Table. This is because the dining table is meant to Represent it Gravitational Pull. So, the dining table is meant to look Grand and All Encompassing in comparison to the chandelier.
